Provider eligibility

  • Updated

Overview

It would be great if all providers were considered Authorized Medical Practitioners (AMP). However, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) does have something to say here!

Provider eligibility depends on a few things:

  • Location of practice
  • What type of care is being provided
  • Provider licensing and registration

This article explains what makes a Provider eligible, why some are not, and how to check before submitting a claim.

The details

What makes a Provider eligible?

Authorized Medical Practitioner status is set by the CRA and varies by province and territory.

Not all provinces and territories recognize all provider types.

For a Provider (such as a Physiotherapist, Chiropractor, or Psychologist) to be eligible, two things will need to be true:

  • The provider type is recognized by the CRA, and
  • The provider is licensed and registered in the province or territory where the service was provided

Not all provinces and territories recognize all provider types, which is why location matters!

This handy chart can show you which provider type is eligible in each province or territory.

Why a Provider might not be eligible

There are a couple reasons a Provider may not qualify:

  • The provider type isn’t recognized by the CRA in the province of practice
  • The provider isn’t licensed or registered in the province or territory where the service was provided

Even when a service is legitimate, eligibility depends on registration and provincial authorization, not just the type of care.

What about regulatory bodies?

When processing claims, we always verify that the Provider is:

  • Registered with the appropriate regulatory body
  • In good standing
  • Practicing legally in the province where the service took place

This helps ensure claims are reimbursed correctly and according to CRA guidelines.
